The new 2RRR web site is now open to the public. While the graphical design is still in progress, we have built a large amount of infrastructure, and have started adding new functionality. We figured putting the site online, we could get better (read: some) feedback as folks watched the site develop.

Stuart Minchin has decided to end his Absolute Zero Breakfast show on Friday mornings from 6am to 8am, and take up breakfast five days per week at 2HHH. Best of luck! If any of our members are interested in replacing Stuart in this much coveted time slot, please let us know. We're looking for someone to permanently fill the slot, or temporarily look after it while we find someone who will.

2RRR has won another award at the CBAA awards held in Hobart on Saturday! Maite and Chris Barbe's Swiss/French program, Trampoline won the 'Outstanding contribution to multicultural broadcasting' award. Well done to Trampoline. Also former 2RRR staffer Jane Costessi was involved in another award for the Womadelaide festival broadcast done through 5UV Radio Adelaide. Congrats Jane! 2RRR congratulates all CBAA award winners. This makes it four at 2RRR (Michael Lister, Tim Traeger, Abe Killian/Peter Bryant and now Trampoline!)

Smeg Radio, 2RRR's CBAA award winning sci-fi, fantasy and cult tv news programme, will be presenting one of the very first reviews of Peter Jackson's "Lord of the Rings" between 6:30pm and 8pm tonight.
In conjunction with the review, they are also presenting a massive competition to win Lord of the Rings books and merchandise.

As of the 29th of December "Sing Along With Johnny", one of 2RRR's longest serving and most popular indie music programmes will be winding up.
The host Matt Curley, has been hosting "Sing Along With Johnny", as it is now known, since it was first broadcast back in November 1990.
The "Sing Along With Johnny" tradition of showcasing a particular artist or group has remained constant, and continued when SAWJ changed timeslots in mid 2000, to Saturday evening 9 - 10pm.
The last show broadcast will be a special on one of Matt's favourite bands - The Pixies - and the theme will continue on into "The R Zone" - Saturday 10pm - 1:30am.
Look out for Matt's other programmes - "The R Zone", "The Missing Link" and the occasional "Transmission" ovenight tape.

Studios are named

In honour of a couple of people who cared for the station we all live in, the studios are now produly dedicated to Ced O'Malley (Studio 1) and Tom McManus (Studio 2).

Ced was presenter of the 'Shamrock program' for many years, and was always one of the first people to welcome new presenters into the station. He passed away in 1999.

Tom was a previous director of 2RRR and presented many Scots music programs and was a noted barbershop singer. Tom passed away in 2001.

I look forward to many years of these studios being called after these two wonderful and loyal people

The one hour programme will air on the first Saturday of every month from 1pm - 2pm starting on December the 7th, hosted by long-time arts presenter Danielle Archer.
It will include information on Animal Rights Organisations, current campaigns, media coverage of animal issues, interviews with activists and others, rallies and events, and information on living a healthy cruelty free lifestyle.

The Cancer Council's Relay for Life is happening on 10-11th May. It's a 24 hour outdoor fundraising event where teams of 10-15 people will walk, run, skip, hop around ELS Hall Park oval in North Ryde. There'll be plenty of food and entertainment all day and night. Known as the Best in the West, this legendary indigenous band is
celebrating 20 years of performing and recording country rock. Fitzroy Xpress has toured the length and breadth of Western Australia, from remote desert communities to major city venues and at festivals. Timeslides features great tracks by Fitzroy Xpress as well as interviews with three of the originals who were part of the creation of the band in tiny Fitzroy Crossing back in 1983. These include 'the man behind the band', Danny Marr, lead singer and band leader and Peter Ghouse, sometimes described as 'the man behind the man behind the band'.

I've also changed the URL of the feed, but you probably already knew that. ;-) Also, all items now have a proper permalink, and all characters are now XML entity compliant (which will help the director who recently cut and pasted a Word document into the feed). A new radio show called 'Radio Show' sat nights 8-10pm on 2rrr 88.5 fm.

At last, music's unhealthily eccentric cousin gets a radio show!

Between 8 and 10pm on saturday nights Brooke and Josh present 2 hours of
field recordings, soundscape, audio destruction and cat miaows (and pretty
much anything else that makes sound), mixed and edited live to air for your
listening displeasure.

THIS IS AN INTERACTIVE RADIO SHOW
So send us your own field recordings, sound and any sort of audio abuse (no
matter how crap)and we'll send it across the airwaves.

The Granny Smith festival is organised each year by Ryde Council, and has 300 market stalls, international food fair, a grand parade, local bands, art space, kids activities and a fireworks spectacular. It runs from 9am - 8:30pm on Sunday 18th October and 2RRR will be there all day.

2RRR Celebrates 20 years of Armenians on the air

November marks the 20th anniversary edition of 2RRR's Armenian program "Voice of Nor Serount".

The show holds an important place within the local Armenian community, and can be heard throughout the north-west and other areas of Sydney on 88.5 fm.

Locals Toros Boyadjian and Vatche Topouzian, have been presenting a nostalgic look back at the past 20 years, revisiting the music as well as local and international news stories that have shaped our lives over the past 2 decades.

Toros Boyadjian says A lot of people have come and gone over the past 20
years...however, the "Voice of Nor Serount" Armenian radio program has
remained steadfast in serving the growing local community...we are still
standing strong!

A special dinner-dance function for the local Armenian community was recently held in Lidcombe as part of the 20th anniversary celebrations, featuring popular local Armenian Band "Komitas"

The Salvation Army - Red Shield Appeal Doorknock May 29-30

The Red Shield Appeal is The Salvation Army's annual fund raising drive and the national doorknock at the end of May is a major component. This year's Doorknock wiil take place over the weekend of May 29-30 and 100,000 volunteer collectors are needed to make the Doorknock a success.

Being part of the Doorknock is lots of fun and the best rewards are the sense of community and the 'feel-good' of helping others. Here's what's involved:
*Takes 2-3 hours of your time - whatever your'e prepared to give.
*The main focus is on Sunday morning, but you can collect anytime over the weekend.

Ryde SES Seeks New Volunteers

Ryde State Emergency Service is looking for new volunteers to assist in their Operations Centre at Macquarie Park. The Operations Centre is responsible for answering calls during emergency situations as well as allocating tasks, co-ordinating teams, managing radio communications and general administration of the Ryde unit. There are many office based tasks that are suitable for volunteers of all ages. The SES provides full training to interested volunteers. No previous experience is required and people of all levels of ability are welcome.

Assisting Voters with a disability at the 2010 Election

The Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) has a range of information and services available to support voters with a disability to ensure their vote in the 2010 federal election on August 21, 2010. A new initiative at the election, telephone voting, is now available at 125 locations across Australia to allow voters who are blind or have low vision to cast a secret vote.
This service is available both before and on election day in all AEC divisional offices and other selected locations listed at http://www.aec.gov.au
Polling places with disabled access are shown at http://www.aec.gov.au including identifying those that are fully accessable, or accessable with assistance. Each polling place also has at least one wheelchair access table top voting screen.
People who are deaf, or have a hearing or speech impairment can use the National Relay Service (NRS) to call the AEC. TTY users phone 133 677 and ask for 13 23 26; Speak and Listen (speech to speech relay) voice only users can phone 1300 555 727
and ask for 12 23 26

Organised by the Rotary Club of Gladesville, The Ryde Rivers Festival is a celebration of the historical significance of the waterways to the City of Ryde, and will raise funds for The Ryde Hospital, Life Education and other Rotary projects. Commencing at 9am with the Fun Walk and Run there will be plenty happening all day.... including the spectacular DRAGON BOAT RACES, the Billy Cart Derby and a leisurely Family Cycle along the banks of River.
