The unofficial campaign for the marginal seat of Bennelong is in full swing, as the country waits for the Prime Minister to name the date of the Federal Election.

Liberal Scott Yung, a local small business owner, is challenging sitting MP, Labor’s Jerome Laxale, for the highly marginal seat.

With the redistribution extending the seat to include Hunters Hill and Lane Cove, this should be ever so slightly in favour of the Liberals based on the last election results.

With the election needing to be called for April or May, Mr Jung took another step towards raising his profile with a visit to local community radio station 2RRR for a live interview with program host Natalie de Silver and 2RRR News Editor Mark “Hendo” Henderson last Tuesday.

The same invitation has been extended to Mr Laxale who has yet to make himself available.

Natalie said Mr Jung was posed a series of questions sent in by listeners. “This was a real exercise in grassroots democracy. We were thrilled with the response from our audience.”

Hendo added “it has shown there is a heightened interest in the election locally with issues like the cost of living and housing affordability.”

Mr Jung raised the issue of the mounting toll on local small businesses, some of which had recently closed. He said the Federal Government could take a lead by reducing its own waste.

“The Coalition supports cutting wasteful government spending and being efficient in the way we invest taxpayers’ money.”

He also said he supported a mix of energy sources, including nuclear and renewables, to combat rising power prices and underscore the reliability of supply.

“Small business owners (for instance) have seen their energy bills nearly double, so we need to ensure our energy is always affordable, on top of that – being reliable and being clean,” Mr Jung said.
