It is the environmental jewel in the crown of the City of Ryde– the ‘Field of Mars Wildlife Reserve’. But its status as a conservation centrepiece was not always certain. Through hard work and determination, a band of dedicated locals 60 years ago were able to save it from its appalling fate. And now, the Ryde Hunters Hill Flora and Fauna Preservation Society is celebrating its 60th Birthday!
On the 2nd of February, Mark Henderson, ‘Hendo’ welcomed the Societies Vice President, Phillip Ward– celebrating this achievement.
The Flora and Fauna Preservation Society was established to preserve our beautiful local bushlands, allowing the flourishing reserve we love and know today. However, in February 1966 the Ryde Council aimed to create the ‘Field of Mars Reserve’ into a garbage tip. Through thorough campaigning, the society was able to persuade the council on a decision that would have impacted our local area for decades.
Shortly after in May, the Australian Army flooded our streets, after approval from the council to use the ‘Field of Mars Reserve’ for military minefields. Local residents protested together on the matter– portraying their love for the local community and region. Thankfully, they also won!
The Ryde Hunters Hill Flora and Fauna Preservation Society has done so much for our local community and to celebrate their 60th birthday, they are inviting everyone to join!
On Sunday the 15th of February, from 12pm-4pm there will be a barbeque and salad lunch at the Visitor Centre at the ‘Field of Mars Reserve’, East Ryde. The festivities will include short formalities, activities for children, a creative scavenger hunt, plants for sale from the ‘The Habitat Nursery’ and much more.
“We just hope that families come along and have a good afternoon there, and will be able to talk about some of the things that we’ve done and hopefully inspire others,” said Ward.
