The proposed Gladesville Shopping Village redevelopment is now with the NSW Planning Department, after Hunters Hill Council voted to recommend changes to the applicable planning controls.
At a packed meeting on Monday 6 July, attended by 35 residents and community group representatives, the Council heard from nine speakers who raised concerns about the proposal’s impact, including its scale and effects on traffic and public transport.
Nina Ardill from the group Gladesville Residents for Responsible Development, who spoke at the Council meeting, joined Natalie and Hendo on The Morning Mix to discuss the plans.
The NSW government has set councils’ housing targets to catch up with demand as the population continues to grow,
The shopping centre replacement has been on the cards for several years but has fallen at various hurdles. A reduced proposal, limited to the shopping centre and some nearby shops, will now undergo further planning control considerations before work can start. It is likely that government, council and developer planning, demolition and construction will take several years; a new shopping village is unlikely to open much before 2030.
The redevelopment will feature two 23-story tower blocks, other apartment buildings, an enlarged Coles supermarket, an open-space laneway, and other features.
Hunters Hill Mayor Zac Miles joined Natalie de Silver on the Morning Mix to respond to community concerns.
